Upside, Understood

How to claim an offer before you pay, and why this is one of the only apps that pays real cash.

Upside is a cash back app for gas, groceries, and dining, and the restaurant side works a little differently from inKind or Blackbird: instead of paying through the app, you claim an offer first, then pay however you normally would.

Claim before you pay

The claiming step matters - Upside can only match a purchase to an offer you've already claimed, so it's worth a quick check of the app before you sit down, not after the check hits the table. Once you pay with the card linked to your Upside account, the app matches the transaction and adds the cash back automatically; some offers confirm right away, others take a few days.

Rates move around, and that's the point

Cash back on Upside typically runs somewhere in the 8–40% range, usually capped around $10 a visit, but the exact number depends on the restaurant, the location, and the specific offer showing that day. Treat any rate you see as a snapshot rather than a promise, and just check the app each time rather than assuming last visit's number still holds.

Real cash, not points

Unlike $FLY or inKind Cash, Upside's payout isn't restricted to spending it back at a restaurant - it's cash you can withdraw to a bank account, PayPal, or a gift card. That makes it the most flexible of the three, even if the rate on any given night is less predictable.

This is a general guide, not a substitute for checking the app - cash back rates, caps, and participating restaurants vary by location and change over time.
